CrossFit Team FBDV Mayhem Africa May Lose Seat In CrossFit Games Due To BOXROX Drug Test Failure

A CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa team member tested positive for a banned substance following the Africa CrossFit Semi-Finals. They are appealing the results but may lose the invitation to the CrossFit Games they received after finishing 1st at the tournament.

CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa came 1st in the Team division at the Rebel Renegades Games, the African CrossFit semi-final tournament and automatically received an invitation to the CrossFit Games. However, there is a big chance that the team will not be allowed to continue their path to fight for the title of Fittest on Earth.

According to a post by Michelle Merand, one of her team members tested positive for a banned substance. We went to the semifinals to win. We knew we would be tested, she wrote.

Merand believes the positive test is likely due to cross-contamination. Unfortunately we live in a world where things go wrong, supplements are contaminated, drug agencies make mistakes, it’s just the way life works and it’s something we can’t control.

She says they are in the appeals process with CrossFit and are praying for a miracle that they will be able to travel to Madison this August to compete in the CrossFit Games.

Merand’s other teammates are Angelique Conway, AJ Visser and Alan Foulis. At the time of writing, only Alan Foulis has reacted to the news in an Instagram Story. We are strong, none of us would ever do such a thing. Please keep us in your prayers, he wrote.

The African semifinals only had room for one team to go to the CrossFit Games. CrossFit Inc. has yet to disclose the results of the CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa appeals process. There are three possible outcomes:

  1. CrossFit decides in favor of the FBDV Mayhem Africa team and the team is allowed to compete at the CrossFit Games.
  2. FBDV Mayhem Africa team is able to prove that there was cross contamination from supplements and the team member who tested positive was banned for 2 years, the team is unable to participate in the 2023 CrossFit Games.
  3. CrossFit rules against the appeal, the positive team member is banned for 4 years and the team is ineligible to compete at the 2023 CrossFit Games.

Of these accomplishments, it is extremely rare for the #1 accomplishment to occur. While the team can prove its innocence, CrossFit believes it is the responsibility of the athletes to know what it puts into their bodies. This is why Merand says they need a miracle to continue their way to the CrossFit Games.

In the event that the CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa team is disqualified, the rules state that the next in line should be invited. Cape CrossFit Wolfpack finished 2na in the semifinals with 555 points.

Last year, Africa 1st The team division spot was also barred from competition at the CrossFit Games after Lize Burns failed a drug test that became embroiled in controversy.

Team CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa Post

Below is Michelle Merands’ full post from Instagram.

It is with a very heavy heart that I sit down and type this message. Unfortunately one of our team members produced a positive drug test. We know 100% that no one has taken any kind of performance enhancing drugs and that these things happen to the best in sports. We went to the semis to win, we knew we were going to be tested. But unfortunately we live in a world where things go wrong, supplements are contaminated, drug agencies make mistakes, it’s just the way life works and it’s something we can’t control.

We are in the appeals process with CrossFit and praying for a miracle. We will stop all fundraisers until we have concrete information for the future.

I ask you to keep us in your prayers. God always has a plan and right now we need to sit back and allow him to take over wherever that may take us.

Please while reading this post take a moment before judging or commenting as we are all dealing with this issue in the best possible way.

This is my team and I’m with them 100%
